Residential landscaping in Hertfordshire

Landscaping built around your garden

Create a garden that works better for everyday life, built from the ground up by one experienced team.

Hertfordshire Drives & Landscapes designs, builds and plants residential gardens across Hertfordshire, combining reliable construction, considered layouts and quality workmanship from the first survey to the final finish.

A complete landscaping service, with one team responsible for the result

A successful garden is about more than choosing paving or planting. The levels need to work, water needs somewhere to go, routes need to feel natural and every material has to be installed correctly if the garden is going to perform well for years to come.

Based near Hitchin, Hertfordshire Drives & Landscapes provides complete residential landscaping across Hertfordshire. Our in-house team can take care of the design, groundwork, hard landscaping and planting, giving you one point of responsibility from the first ideas through to completion.

Whether you are starting with a tired garden, an overlooked new-build plot or a space that simply no longer works for your family, we begin by understanding what needs to change.

Landscaping planned as one complete space

Hard landscaping, built properly

The parts you see are only as reliable as the work underneath them. We build patios, terraces, paths, steps, retaining walls, garden walls, driveways, decking, pergolas and other constructed features around the specific conditions of the site.

That means considering access, excavation, ground conditions, levels, falls, drainage and the correct foundations or sub-bases before the final surface is installed.

From accurate cuts and clean edges to the relationship between a terrace, lawn and doorway, our focus is straightforward: get the construction right and finish it with care.

Planting, lawns and the finishing touches

Good planting brings structure and construction to life.

Our landscaping teams also install lawns, trees, hedging, shrubs and planting beds as part of complete garden projects, so the soft landscaping is considered alongside the surfaces, boundaries and built features rather than added as an afterthought.

We look at light, soil, exposure, available space and the level of maintenance you are comfortable with before specifying what belongs where.

Where appropriate, irrigation can also be incorporated into the wider landscaping scheme to make ongoing watering easier and help new planting establish.

LANDSCAPING SOLUTIONS

Gardens designed around the way you want to live

Every garden has a different job to do. These are some of the most common problems we help Hertfordshire homeowners solve.

Family-friendly gardens

Create practical areas for children, dining and relaxing without allowing one use to take over the whole garden.

We use clear zoning, durable materials, sensible lawn areas and planting to create a garden that works now and can adapt as family life changes.

Gardens for entertaining

Bring cooking, dining and relaxing together with well-positioned terraces, seating areas, pergolas and outdoor kitchen zones.

We consider movement from the house, furniture space, lighting, privacy and how each area connects before construction begins.

Low-maintenance gardens

Spend more time using the garden and less time maintaining it.

Porcelain and other durable surfaces, manageable planting, practical lawn areas, irrigation and carefully planned borders can reduce upkeep without leaving the garden feeling hard or empty.

Privacy & screening

Make an overlooked garden more comfortable using fencing, planting, hedging, pergolas and carefully positioned screening.

We look at sightlines across the whole garden so privacy improvements feel integrated rather than simply adding height to every boundary.

New-build garden transformations

Turn a basic lawn-and-fence plot into a garden with character, useful spaces and better connections to the house.

New-build gardens often benefit from improvements to levels, drainage, boundaries, planting and entertaining space as part of one coordinated project.

Sloping & awkward gardens

Difficult levels, narrow plots and awkward layouts can often become some of the most useful parts of a garden.

Steps, retaining walls, terraces, raised planting and better routes can unlock space while resolving the practical construction and drainage issues at the same time.

Designed together. Built together.

One of the advantages of working with HDL is that garden design, construction and planting do not need to be treated as separate projects.

Our team can develop the layout, produce plans and visualisations where required, build the hard landscaping and complete the planting.

That continuity helps practical decisions get resolved early. A planting bed can be given enough depth. A terrace can be sized around real furniture. Levels can be coordinated with thresholds and lawns. Services for lighting, irrigation or an outdoor kitchen can be considered before finished surfaces go down.

The result is a garden that has been thought through as a whole.

Quality materials. Proper preparation. Clean finishes.

The most expensive material in the catalogue will not compensate for poor preparation.

We select paving, stone, porcelain, timber, aggregates and other landscaping materials according to the property, intended use and conditions of the site, then install them using the preparation required for long-term performance.

We also use our established supplier relationships when sourcing materials and coordinating specialist products such as garden structures or outdoor kitchens.

It is part of the same principle that runs through every HDL project: recommend what is appropriate, build it correctly and pay attention to the finish.

From first survey to final fix

Our landscaping design & build process

A clear process keeps decisions organised and gives every stage of the project the information it needs.

Step 1

Understand the brief

We start with how you want to use the garden, what is not working now and which improvements matter most.

This gives us a practical brief rather than designing around assumptions.

Step 2

Survey the garden

We assess dimensions, access, levels, drainage, existing structures and ground conditions before finalising the solution.

Understanding the site early helps us make better decisions about both the design and construction.

Step 3

Design & specification

We develop the layout, materials, planting and construction details around the agreed brief.

Depending on the project, this can include plans, technical drawings and 3D visualisations to make important decisions clear before work starts.

Step 4

Build & finish

Your landscaping is completed by one of our experienced teams under the supervision of its foreman.

We manage the sequence of groundwork, construction, installation and planting so the different elements come together as one finished garden.

The work carried out by them has been high quality and we are really pleased with our finished lovely contemporary easy to maintain family garden. It has allowed us to make the most of the space and it now feels a natural extension of our home. I wanted to feel like we were in the Mediterranean and that's the finish we got.

We booked Hertfordshire Drives & Landscapes to design and landscape a large area of our garden that was overgrown and had been left to it's own devices for years. The team were absolutely amazing from start to finish. They took our suggestions and created a great design - the work started within a few weeks of making the first enquiry and was completed ahead of their proposed end date. There were no delays for supplies and the quality of the work was exceptional. The team were super professional, friendly and talented. Genuinely cannot recommend the company enough.

We commisioned Hertfordshire Drives to re-pave a 60m2 garden patio in sandstone, along with rebuilding a tiered garden wall and raised bed. The team had great ideas and included nice details within their original quote price. The project was completed quickly and to a high standard with minor snagging resolved quickly and profressionally. The team are friendly and kept us update on whatsapp throughout. Would highly recommend!

Hertfordshire drives and landscapes did a fantastic job of turning our uneven scrub patch full of lumps of concrete weeds and stumps into a beautiful garden complete with patio, lush even lawn and new fencing. The attention to detail was fantastic and the guys couldn’t have been more helpful in guiding me with decisions, with clear explanations for their recommendations. Their experience was obvious and all my neighbours wanted their contact details because they did such a great job.

Would definitely recommend Hertfordshire Drives and Landscapes. They replaced an old patio with porcelain tiles and installed a new path. Tom, Zach and Will were an excellent team, nothing was too much trouble and Tom suggested minor enhancements to our project which improved the overall finish. The communication was outstanding, both from Mia in the office and the on-site team. The whatsapp group was a great idea and meant you were kept up to speed at all stages of the project. We had a few problems with foxes once the turf had been laid and Tom went over and above ordering fox alarms and carrying out repairs to electrical cables. We're delighted with the end result, a huge thank you to Tom and the team. It was a pleasure to work with such a professional company.
